But where I live now the prison is in quite an affluent part of the Island. The prisoners recently went on strike because they have no air conditioning, which is against their human rights apparently they are going to get it. Also the meals are said to be very good as they grow all their own vegatables. they are allowed to sunbath in the Exercise yard, and the prison is quite close to all the embassies so its quite handy really. This was also the case when I lived on another Island. They are also allowed to go to other prisons close to where their relatives live, because it would cost to much to keep paying for relatives to visit, so prison officers spend a considerable amount of time at airports, either taking a prisoner,or waiting for one to come back. Then they get a free lift back to their digs at the prison. Think I might book 2 weeks? what do you think?

Even in the UK where possible, which is not as often as it should be prisoners serve time at prisons closer to their families, unfortunately there are fewer womens prisons and they usually end up many miles fron their children, which may ring a bell with you!

You have no idea what prison is like - by your own admission. You don't think that maybe the warders and other staff need air con then? I'm sure you'd be complaining if they didn't grow their own veg as well - they should do more of it here. How much exercise would you be doing in those temperatures? Don't understand why it's handy being near the embassies - not like they're going anywhere is it?

What's wrong with inmates growing produce for the prison kitchen? It provides an important part of a healthy diet at a minimal expense to the taxpayers, seems like a win/win to me and I wish all prisons did it.
What on earth does proximity to embassies have to do with anything- with the exception of citizens imprisoned on foriegn soil, embassies do not concern themselves with correctional issues.
Air conditioning seems to me not to be a luxury in a presumably tropical climate, but a neccessity to safeguard the health of ailing and elderly inmates, if ablebodied, healthy inmates also benefit, so be it.

If the prison pays for ANY part of the expenses incurred when an inmate gets a visit, then you are not in the U.S.- those costs are borne by the visitors and hardship transfers to prisons nearer an inmates family are rare, usually granted only when an immediate family member has a legitimate medical condition that make travelling significant distances unsafe.
Sunbathing in the excercise yard? SO BLOODY WHAT!!!!!????!!!!
Whatever the reason they are in prison, these are still human beings and cannot, morally or legally, be denied sunlight.

By all means, please, go spend a few weeks in prison and then come back and tell us all how soft and cushy it is.

Where do you live? Obviously not the UK! I'd be interested to know - I work with prisoners in the London area and it's nothing like what you describe!

I visited a friend in prison 4 years ago...he committed suicide 4 days later. You are right, you have never even visited a prison so why are you passing judgement?

Watch "Lock Up" on MSNBC. They go inside prisons and show you what it's really like. They are NOT country clubs! They are no place you'd want to go. Watch and see. Even the ones that do get little "perks," you still do not have your freedom and you're told what to do, when to do it at every turn. They're loud, cramped, overcrowded, smelly, dirty, etc.
