Go to google or some other search engine and do a search on snakes native to your area. Concentrate on the non-venomous and harmless snakes like garter snakes and corn snakes. Look up any sites and information you can find that look like they are written by people who are real snake fans, especially ones with lots of pictures. See if you can find a forum for people who have pet snakes and join it. They will most likely talk a lot about how cute and wonderful their snakes are. At first it might be hard to even look at or think about snakes without shuddering, but eventually you will start to appreciate how these people feel about their snakes and then you can take the next step - go around to some pet stores, look at the snakes and see if you can find someone there who has a snake and will talk to you about snakes and maybe let you handle a snake. Most importantly, don't push yourself any faster than you are comfortable with.

Go to a pet store that carries snakes but don't go inside. At least not yet. Once you are ready to proceed then go inside the pet store (just inside the door). Then look for the location of the snake section (perhaps against a distant wall or in some corner). Then gradually get closer to the area, maybe leaving and coming back the next day, getting closer to the snake area every time. Keep moving closer, until you can press your nose against the glass cage. Eventually, with the cooperation of the pet store owner (they usually cooperate), you can actually hold the snake. This is a relatively painless way to "sneak up on the phobia."

Go to someone who owns a nice one or a reptile expo. The people at the expos are very knowledgeable and will be able to calm any concerns and misconceptions people have about snakes. They'll even show you how to handle a snake. Ask them to let you hold a ball python. They are slow-moving and are one of the most hesitant of all species to bite, so you can forget that fear anyway.
I myself own a 4 ft ball python and absolutely adore him! He's very shy and will curl up on my lap and let me stroke him. Other times he just wants to wander around in the snake-proofed rooms of the house. My friend who was less than fond of snakes came over and didn't even want to touch him. By that evening he was culred up in her lap while she stroked him for about half an hour. When it was time for her to leave she was like "Awww! But he's so comfy here!" Changed her perspective of some snakes anyway. I'm so proud of my little boy. ^.^

Learn more about them. Buy a book on keeping snakes, or do some reaserch on the internet. If you know about them, you can overcome your fear of them. You can also go to the pet store, and ask the people questions about them. Try going to a reptile show, and look at all the species of snake they have there.
If you know anybody who owns a snake, try asking them if you can feed the snake or handle it. I personally love snakes, they are so cool!

My friend had a small phobia of snakes, then he came over one day and told me he was going to get over it. It took a couple hours, but he finally was able to completely hold the snake and hes glad he did. They are great animals, and very cute if you look at them the right way.
My suggestion is to read about them, and ask owners about them and they'll tell you how nice they are, then eventually get closer and closer.

Go to www.cornsnakes.com It is an excellent forum where everyone talks about snakes and they have an excellent photo gallery--the colors are simply amazing. Just read the posts and learn about these wonderful creatures. You don't have to end up loving them, but you can come to appreciate them for what they are.

You have to face fear itself! You have to go and touch a snake and get use to it day by day, then you won't be afriad no more!
