1/5X + (3/8) of (4/5)X-250=0
anytime you see "of" multiply
Therefore:
1/5X+(3/8*4/5)x-250=0
3/8*4/5=12/40
(8X+12X)/40-250=0
(8X+12X)/40=250
8X+12x=10000
20X=10000
X=500
$500.00 is what Joe had to begin with.
He has $250.00 left
What fraction?
250/500 is the fraction left
reduces to 1/2
He spent 1/5 on books or 1/5 of 500= 100
He spent 3/8 of 4/5 or 12/40 or 3/10 0n recorder=150
Has 250 left
250+150+100=500

$250 is the remaining 5/8, so 1/8 is $50. $50 * 8 = the initial remainder of $400. $400 is the remaining 4/5, so 1/5 is $100, meaning he had $500 originially. 250 / 500 means he has 1/2 of his money left.

1/5 = 8/40 and 3/8 = 15/40
So Joe spent 23/40 0f his money
So he has 1-23/40 = 17/40 of his money left.
