Like a snowstorm or a hurricane? How are you helped? Do you go and stay with family?

What about when the power goes out? Do you have a generator?

gabymac - I wouldn't get a generator for an apt. We had an incident where a person put their generator on the balcony and it spewed carbon monoxide. Don't think that is a good idea. May catch fire too.

I lived in a hurricane zone for many years so I always have en emergency pack. During storms, i.e. hurricanes. tornadoes, floods, I also am a shelter manager for American Red Cross, so I am there helping others and try to get things to move quickly to get necessary supplies for my people, try to get my people cots, snacks, water, food, etc.
But I am disaster ready with extra batteries, canned food, water, TV/radio/weather channel appliance, flashlights, candles, first aid supplies, I also keep a clean up kit with necessary cleaning supplies for post disaster cleanup.

Daisymae, I have lived through a few power outages that have lasted for days. I can tell you absolutely that they are scary things...especially trying to survive in an old (not very well insulated) house during a power outage in the winter.

You soon learn to bundle together for warmth. For the last one, we were on the verge of hauling all the mattresses to make one big bed in the middle of the livingroom floor, when the power came back on.

The hardest thing is having to cook up all the partially thawed meat from the freezer before it can go bad. And having to throw out all the completely thawed meat and the spoiled dairy products. Better losing a couple of hundred dollars in food than a family member to food poisoning.

I watch the weather and stock up on things. I do have a generator, but the power has only been out 6 hours in the last 20 years. I have helped my neighbors when needed.

Wow, this question is geared for the true Seniors.
Because I have lived in all sorts of foul weather conditons, I have learned to live prepared 24/7. I have food and water for one week in storage. I rotate my stocks. I know what a blinding blizzard can do, and I've been there done that many times with hurricanes.
Most of my children are living scattered throughout the USA so we tend to have to take care of ourselfs.

I'm able to take care of myself. But if I wasn't my daughter would help.

I live in an apartment. Could I still use a generator if I needed one? I have a balcony with an outlet?

I try to beat my grandmother to the store when we have bad weather but she always insists on going out on the worst days!
We buy her plenty of things but she never uses them and they go stale. When you go to her house you have to look out what you eat.......she was making oatmeal cookies one day and the oatmeal had all bugs in it. My Mom and Aunt take turns cooking for her ( very nutritious meals) but she will go down the store and buy Twinkies. If the power goes out she has to come over our house.
