Since I was academically disqualified from Cal Poly, I have considered changing majors. I just started at a community college that has TAG agreements, and is on the quarter system. I want to transfer out at the end of this year, as it would be my junior year fall 2008.. Would it be easier for me to reapply at Cal Poly, as a biochemistry major, or should I just apply at other schools, possibly a UC?

Also, what would be a good school that has a good biochem program, but is not so hard to get into?

I don’t know your personal situation so I am going to answer with more questions.

Have you talked to an advisor before you left CP? If your goal is to go back to CP ASAP, you could have tried appealing your dismissal. You can also enroll as an open university student and try to bring up your GPA before being readmitted. The only danger to this option is that unless you figure out what you have been doing wrong, you will be in more trouble.

If your goal is to go to a UC, why wouldn't you want to consider the TAG program, if you qualify? Is that because it would take too long? You would have to spend another 2-3 semesters at the JC. But you already are a student there and staying there for a while may give you a fresh start and an opportunity to figure out things. But if you don’t allow yourself to change your attitude, how much better are you going to do if you went back to CP at the end of the year? But perhaps your problems were just temporary and you have already put them behind you.

I think you need to talk to an advisor at CP to hear more options. Also maybe you should wait until how things go at the JC before you make your final decision. I am not saying you should not plan but figure out what you want in life. I know that you are anxious to get your life back on track but is the speed the most important thing for you right now? You are going to get through this and graduate. But perhaps if you should look at the bigger picture, it will help you with your grades as well.

I'll defer to others on the best biochem programs, but it's definitely easier to get into Cal Poly than any UC school...
