Ignore those idiots that say reformat and install XP or Linux as most definitely the first replier who said take it back and demand a refund what a twit! I remember that the same problems happened when XP first arrived on the scene the one before SP2 god that was a pile of crap and so full of holes!! There is nothing wrong with Vista i had the 32bit version of Home Premium for a while but now have the 64bit version and it works perfectly!
But enough of that what you will have to do is phone Microsoft's helpline and make sure that you have your genuine product key at hand so that they can verify that you are not using a pirated version of it and they will be more than happy to help you out in any way that they can i only hope that they don't have to charge you for a new product key!

The product key is located inside the CD jewell case. If you have a"bootlegged" copy of Vista, well you're out of luck. Vista requires that you register it with Microsoft.
If it is a purchased legal copy and you lost the jewel case you can contact Microsoft either via email or phone and ask them for a new one. Make sure you tell them if it's Vista Home basic, or Premium, or etc. Otherwise they will give you a key for Basic when you actually bought Premium. Note: All version of Vista are on the same CD. The key is what allows you to install the version you purchased.
I can't understand why, after 6 months, it told you this. have you changed the motherboard in your PC? Sometimes if you change the hardware the OS thinks it's is being loaded on a different system. I had this problem when I upgraded my motherboard. I had to contact Microsoft and convince them I was only running their software on the original 1 system, not a second system.

The best way to fix this is to go out and buy Windows XP and install that instead of Vista. Vista should have never been released to the public. It is basically beta software which is still being tested by people just like you.
XP actually works. I highly recommend it.
Enough of my opinion.
If you have your product key for Windows Vista, then you should enter it at the prompt. Look on your computer for a sticker that is blue, pink, and green with a 25-digit alphanumeric code separated by dashes.
If you don't have this, then the unfortunate truth is that you will probably have to call Microsoft to get technical support (direct from India), or you will have to reinstall your OS.
Both options are not that great... Please refer to my opinions back at the top of this message and you won't have these types of issues.

If it is really a genuine product key you should call microsoft customer service (It should give you the number when it gives you the error message). They can provide you with a new one. If you have reformatted you computer theres a limit of times you can reload windows into your system before having to call them for a new code.
If it isn't a genuine windows vista you are going to have to find another product key that works or... buy the program yourself.

(emphasis mine)
If you asked your plumber if a complete re-do of all your plumbing in your house was really necessary, with the plumber being in the position of the absolute authority (like MS in this case), would you trust the plumber to be honest knowing that to be dishonest makes more money?
Another, simplified, example: If you walked up to a random person on the street and said "say, don't I owe you $20.00?" would you honestly expect the person to say no? Would you trust them if they said yes? Perhaps if you are deluded enough to think that people (businesses are made of people) are that trustworthy.
If people were that trustworthy, we wouldn't have identity theft, malware, fraud, purjury, etc.,... The fact the law acknowledges such things is proof that blind trust is a dangerous thing - laws regarding these issues wouldn't exist if the problem they attempt to govern didn't exist.
Why would anyone choose to blindly trust the entity that makes a profit on sales to not encourage more sales (or elicit, coerce, conscript)
Not to say MS does that, but they are in a position to do so whether they are or are not.... with the only verification coming from MS - you know, the company that profits when they tell you you need to buy the OS because it was pirated
All we have for evidence is what we trust MS to give us in this regard.
Do you still think Windows Genuine Advantage is to help protect YOU from the scourge of software piracy rather than protect MS profit margins?
Inconvenient fact: Piracy prevention schemes don't have an effect on pirates, only on normal, legitimate consumers.
You are paying a price for the misdeeds of other people.

You need to talk to Microsoft. The key has already been hacked and is use by someone else. You need to call them and tell them that you tried to re-install the os and that it says that it is not genuine. I have had to do this several times working on other peoples computers. They will ask you some questions and then help you with the install.

Get the product key. It should be on something that came with your computer. If not either call Microsoft and see what they can do or you may have to reformat....what i call restart from scratch. You will lose everything except the stuff that came with your computer. You will need the disks that came with your computer.
