I am a "Thriller" book fanatic and have read a huge percentage thats out there, so here are some excellent choices (I was going to say "page turner" until I heard the joke "why do people say this book is a real page turner--I know how books work!) Jeffery Deaver, Dennis Lehane, David Morrell and Lee Child, in my opinion they are the best thriller writers in the business!! I am a avid reader in this genre and have read Coben, King, Koontz, F. Paul Wilson, Connelly, and many others but none can touch these authors I've listed! The Deaver book I've just finished reading now is "The Sleeping Doll"--a brand new release and has literally keeped me up at nights!! I'm quite sure you'll love his other thrillers as well, such as "The Bone Collector", "A Maiden's Grave", "The Coffin Dancer", "Praying For Rain", "Cold Moon", "The Twelveth Card", "The Vanished Man", "Devil's Tear Drop" et el. For Lehane, start with "A Drink Before War" (don't let the title fool you) then "Darkness Take My Hand", "Sacred", "Gone, Baby Gone", "Prayers For Rain", "Shutter Island" and "Mystic River." For Lee Child, you can start with his first and move forward, but it's Ok if you don't. Some personal favs are: "One Shot", "Trip Wire", "Hard Luck and Trouble"--a new release, "The Persuader"-my personal fav, "The Hard Way", but they are all page turners! Also, last but definately not least is David Morrell. All his books are good, but I especially enjoy his last two releases "Creepers" and "Scavenger" which are guaranteed page-turners. Just finished my first Ed Mcbain book "Fiddlers" and it was both engaging and hilarious! Hope this helps, enjoy, Greg

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier is a great Gothic mystery novel. I generally don't care for books in this genre, but Rebecca really caught my interest and held onto it until the very last page.
Another good set of mystery novels (albeit shorter ones) are any of the Nero Wolfe mysteries by Rex Stout. They have great characters, a good mystery, and brilliant humor from its chief narrator, Archie Goodwin! Some of the best titles, for me, would be The Golden Spiders, Over My Dead Body, Death of a Dude, The Doorbell Rang, Prisoner's Base, and The Silent Speaker.
If you like science fiction, you might also consider the Vatta's War series by Elizabeth Moon. Each book builds on the suspense and tension of the other; and, to date, there are four books - Trading in Danger, Marquis and Reprisal, Engaging the Enemy, and Command Decision.
Other good books that are classics, too, are The House of the Seven Gables and The Scarlet Letter (both by Hawthorne), Jane Eyre by Bronte, Moby Dick by Melville, and Silas Marner by George Eliot.
Hope these help!

My favorite books are historical fiction, like those books that are diaries, like the Royal Diaries...theres one about Marie Antoinette, Cleopatra, etc. They are fun, exciting and not too long. Of course theres Harry Potter, and while you say your not into "fantasy" I would say give it a try, you never know. Millions of HP fans can't be wrong.
Also, you might really like this series of books starring a british girl named Georgia Nicolson who is super wity and funny, thats also written in diary format, it makes for a really juicy read because its like reading someones personal thoughts. Anyways Georgia is a teen who faces all the embarrasing, outrageous and comical moments girls face, I would recommend those books HIGHLY! If your read nothing, read those--you will laugh, gasp in shock, and gasp in shock some more. The first one I read was "On the Bright Side, I'm Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God." These books are by Louise Rennison. The other books have equally funny names like "Dancing in my nuddy pants" and "Knocked out by my nunga nungas."

I just read three books by Sonya Sones which I really enjoyed. They are called What My Mother Doesn't Know, What My Boyfriend Doesn't Know, and One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies. The main characters are 14 and 15 years old and are teens dealing with teen problems. They are written in a very simple verse style that makes for very fast, enjoyable reading. I liked them a lot.
One of my all-time favorite series is The Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce. In the first book, Alanna: The First Adventure, young Alanna switches places with her twin brother and disguises herself as a boy in order to achieve her dream of becoming a knight. Along the way, she must not only deal with hiding her true identity, but also the struggles of growing up, the difficulties of knighthood training, and learning to use the magic that she fears.
Another of my favorites is called Dangerous Angels, a collection of 5 short novels by Francesca Lia Block, which tell the story of Weetzie Bat and her family, their lives, loves, and struggles in an almost-fairytale-like vision of Los Angeles. Her style is beautiful and her characters so different and intriguing.
A few of my other favorites include The China Garden by Liz Berry, Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, Tithe by Holly Black, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, Howl's Moving Castle by Diane Wynne Jones, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley.

i really love to read, mostly mystery books. i always have. two of my absolute favorite mysteries are "The Night I Disappeared" by Julie Reece Deaver which is about a girl who's mother is a high profile lawyer and doesn't have much time for her. besides that she keeps having odd daydreams. no one notices them until she meets a friend who has also had a little "nutty" side. eventually her daydreams become so bad that she becomes imprisoned by her own mind and her family/friends are unable to pull her out. she finally seeks help from a therapist, but she also discovers horrifying secrets from her past. the other is "Blue is for Nightmares" by Laurie Faria Stolarz and it's about a girl who goes to bording school (who also has a crush on her bff's boyfriend) and she is suddenly having nightmares, wierd emails and freaky phone calls. many people think it's just a joke, until someone is murdered. if you don't like mysteries, try "Nothing But Drama" or "Uglies." hope this helps!

I highly recommend the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. It's pretty good. Not really fantasy. If you like teen fiction, pick up Meg Cabot, Sarah Dessen, or Joan Bauer books. They have excellent books with unique plots :)

My favorite book is probably Pride And Prejudice by Jane Austen. It's one of the most loved books in the world. I highly recommend it. There is also a BBC/A&E mini-series, with Colin Firth & Jennifer Ehle, based on the book that is extremely good. I haven't seen the movie with Keira Knightly but I've heard that it's not as good as the mini-series.

If you're not a big reader, you probably want shorter books with shorter chapters. Holes, by Louis Sachar is great.
Other authors you might like are Gary Paulsen, Jerry Spinelli, Walter Dean Myers. Sorry, I'm making an assumption that you're a guy.
Also, you might think about what topics interest you and look for nonfiction about things that you like.
