For 3 nights now, My son has vomited all of his bottle and more. Its been around the same time every night and after he does it, its like he feels fine and goes back to sleep. He's on Enfamil Lipil with Iron and we thought maybe it was his formula. We use Dr.Browns bottles and they dont seem to be working...air still comes through, so we just bought some playtex drop-ins. Today he's been restless, really fussy and congested. He's usually a VERY good baby, never have i seen him act this way. Any suggestions of what could be wrong?

A few things could be occuring...the same thing happened with my son. This is what his doctor told me.

First, stop worrying. Babies puke...sometimes for no reason other than they just ate too much.

You could try a gentler formula...do not switch it all at once wean him into it. first i would try, since you like enfamil, lactofree. If that doesnt work, i would try nutramigen. My son was on this since birth until recently i switched. it smells bad but it is hypoallergenic, and partially digested i think also. When you switch...depending on the size of the bottle, lets just say 8 oz...which i know is a lot but for example...1 scoop lactofree, 3 scoops lipil. then a day or so later 1/2 and 1/2. then a couple days later 3 scoops lactofree, 1 scoop lipil. then the full formula of lacto free. You can mix it up in 8 oz batches and just give it to him 2 oz at a time and that may make it easier to wean into it.

also, he is not throwing up his whole bottle. it only looks like it. i freaked out so much when my son did it. I was so scared he wasnt getting enough to eat and that he had something wrong with him. My doctor told me that as long as he is gaining weight he will be fine. Even if he had a problem with the flap over his esophagus not closing good, they would not operate unless he was loosing weight or not gaining any.

also try to keep him upright and not lying down after his meals. gravity should help also.. try putting him in his swing or something (not swinging of course) or propped up with a boppy or a pillow.

he'll be fine, i know you are doing great. hang in there.

Ours did the same thing and our doctor switched our formula to Enfamil AR Lipil with the rice starches. He's not puked once since...

I see nothing wrong with what you did. Its not like you were lusting over your son. You did what you hought was best for your son. You went out your way to do that for your son mean you are caring. People may see it as weird, awkward and wrong but if your reason for doing what you did was of a good innocent reason then you done no wrong. People overeact. I'm not a parent. I'm a 21 year old female.

Try feeding him smaller amounts. Lots of people seem to feel that injecting 4 oz of fluid into a newborn is a good idea. His stomach is, and should always be about the size of his fist. At the newborn stage, it doesn't stretch, so filling up with too much (and yes the baby will continue to suckle even if he's full) might be the culprit. Try switching to 2 oz. The smaller amount might be easier to digest.

Formula is really hard on babies' digestions.

You might want to reconsider breastfeeding, it's not too late!

A lactation consultant at the hospital where you delivered can help you relactate. That should decrease his fussiness, his reflux, his puking, and well, everything.

Not trying to be snotty, but nursing really is easier on baby's tummy, and is something you could consider for his best interest.

my younger son was like that. the doctor put him on Enfamil AR Lipil and still his soy formula. it took a few weeks, but then it was more a normal spit up. definitely see the doctor about this.

If he doesn't seem dehydrated, has enough wet diaper, he could just be getting a early cold. It wouldn't hurt to call the pediatrician. It could also be an intolerance to the formula.

He may be lactose intolerant. I would change him to a low lactose or a lactose free to see if that helps. Similar makes one called "sensitive".
