Files on my computer seem to mysteriously disappear from my PC, and I can't rule out the possibility that something is deleting them.

There shouldn't be any risks involved in Defrag'ing your PC as long as your computer doesn't randomly restart / shut off during the process. I have, however, known files to go missing after doing a Check Disk, although this also usually means that your hard drive is on it's way out!

Its just a normal maintenance task which puts together the files that have been broken into fragments and scattered allover the drive. If the power gets cut during the defrag, it may be dangerous. Besides that there is no risk. In fact its worse if the drive gets highly fragmented and you continue to let the disease grow, because it will lead to instability, the system will get slow and may hang/freeze.

Defragin your PC takes all the clutter on your hard drive and sorts it and packs it. There is no danger when you do this. If you have files that are mysteriously being deleted, is there anyone else using your PC. If not you may have malware/spyware or worse a virus. Run a good virus scanner and spyware program to check and make sure everything is ok. here are 2 that are free and very good.

There is no risk in defragmenting the hard drive.. But only do it if u have at least 15% free disk space in each drive.

Normally there shouldn't be any risk defragmenting the harddrive. Just make sure to close all other applications first. I'd recommend scanning for virus first, then defrag.

Apart from the wear on the disks, nothing. Unless you are a very very high volume downloader or saver there is no need to defrag more than once or twice a year.
