Tobacco taxes are NOT about getting people to quit. If they were...why would we be selling the stuff to the Chinese? It's just a way to raise taxes to pay for "other" ills.
It's punitive to convenience stores nationwide who depend on smokers who buy cigarettes ...and then spend on milk, bread, snaks, gas and whatnot.

I definately agree. What would they do without the tax money they get from cigarettes. That's why I'm outraged by the anti-smoking cities. You hate smokers so much .... stop selling cigarettes in your city. If they truely care then ban the sale of the cigarettes and their tax money, don't just say you can't smoke there. They still gladly accept our tax money, but say smoking is bad for everyone. Fine...follow it through, ban the sale.

The taxes help offset SOME of their impact on health spending. The fact that people don't just die, but become incapacitated requiring long term intensive care is extremely expensive.

Taxes help maintain the infrastructure required to cope with the load of patients ill due to smoking.

Also, I don't think people would stop using the corner store if they don't smoke. You still run out of things and don't want to trek to the grocery store. It would be better for our people, kids and health future if our income and taxes came from healthy, hard working, income tax paying folk. Rather than wheezing wrecks on disability.

I'm not saying these things to be rude I see the results of smoking in graphic detail daily on the job. It made me quit in 1990, which was hard, but necessary and very worth the effort (like most things that are good for us).

Taxes generally speaking are a blatant ripoff of the American public. Every politician promises not to raise them before he/she gets into office and sees no other alternative once in office. Our govt. will continue to raise and waste our hard earned tax dollars at will because they know a huge portion of the American public either dont even realize theyre getting hosed or will only ***** and moan about it but sit home glued to American Idol on TV come election day. Do you think its fair that a persons highest monthly expense is taxes? The more you make the more they take especially if youre single. During winter months when I make my best money they gouge me for $2000 or more a mo. Twice that of alot of peoples mortgage pymnts. Dont think Im not pissed every time I look at my ck. stub.

I no longer smoke but I believe the government ought to stay out of people's business when it comes to their individual proclivities. The encroachment is unnecessary and creates a divide between not only the people and government, but pits people against people. Funny how everyone wants to bash a smoker because of second hand smoke but neglect to do squat about pollution. Heck, what do you think 1 single airliner is doing as opposed to one smoker for life. The priorities are wayyyy wrong. (But I am glad I quit!)

I agree. They're not about getting people to quit. They call them sin taxes. There are also a lot of taxes on alcohol. They want to go after fat & sweets next. It's easier to tax those things because they don't affect everyone.

agree, the ill effects of tobacco use and the fact that it is addicitive isn't any new news by any measure, so if they get people addicted and raise the tax on this because desperate people will pay anything... not people's fault..... why not just make it illegal if they want people to quit.... "the man" just wants the money
