Will this happen?

Not quite. The Diamondbacks and Devil Rays had to agree that, if realignment was approved within their first N (ten, I think) years in MLB, and either was selected to change leagues, they could not refuse. Didn't happen.

My understanding of events was that as the process of bringing the Diamondbacks to reality was under way, a decision to begin Interleague play was made. So any plans of starting Arizona in the AL had to be changed. The Twins, Brewers, and Royals were each asked to transfer to the NL to facilitate I.P. and the Brewers were the first to accept after the Royals and Twins declined when it came their turn. I think it went to KC first, then to Minnesota and then the Brewers.

I recall something that was in the papers about a year or so ago that had them trading places with an AL team but I can't say what that was about.

Unless there is something else in the works that I haven't been aware of, I think that is probably what you are hearing about.

Quite true. The ownership was very P.O.'d when it didn't happen in the 5 year time frame, but got over it when Luis Gonzalez hit the flair that won the 2001 World Series.
