I find it somewhat disturbing that some people at high school and college events are so preoccupied during the flag raising and anthem. I think patriotism has gone the way of religion in the classrooms.

I was at a recent event when an honored congressman was busy fanning himself and adjusting his clothing during the anthem. He will not get my vote!!

I was pleased to see the passage of OK Sen Inhofe.s bill that allows veterans and servicemen out of uniform to salute the flag.

For racer 51:
The Law was ambiguous as to whether servicemen or veterans out of uniform could or should make the traditional military salute. This law just makes it official.

There is a time and place for everything..during the Anthem, the time and place is to stand still, think of our solders who have died defending us, and paying respect to all our country that has given us so much. As much as I hate sounding like an old foggey, I take offense at the disrespect we see daily at sporting events, and such. Hell, I don't understand appaulding after the anthem...but that is just me, I suppose.

It does bug me when I see people yakking on cell phones and what not during the National Anthem...but then I've seen the same thing happen in churches, too! Pathetic, eh?

I'm all for the vets saluting if they want to do it...but there's nothing wrong with just standing solelmly and putting your hand over your heart, either.

I tell ya what really annoys me. How the Jehovahs Witnesses will not respect the flag or say the pledge, but then they use the 1st Amendment as an excuse to come to your door to shove their beliefs down your throat.

Perhaps because the reputation of The US with much of the rest of the world has slipped. After all the vast majority of folk regularly honouring the US flag, do so because its a compulsory part of the school day and those kids are either too young or do not have the right to make up their own mind.

Yes, I honor the Flag as well as the pledge. I always put my hand over my heart when I pledge allegiance. Also, when I sing the Star Spangled Banner. It saddens me that the young have had this experience taken from them. It is no wonder that there is a lack of patriotism in this country any longer. It makes me fear that the USA will be a thing of the past if we continue on this path.

My flag is flown on my house 24/7. I have a small flag attached to my motorcycle. I have a POW/American flag on my desk and I found one that I attached to our warehouse forklift.
I ride with the Patriot Guard Riders and one thing we stress is honoring our flag PROPERLY. We never dip it when in a flag line but ensure it is held erect. When it is mounted on our motorcycles, it is mounted on the rider's RIGHT. No other flag takes that place or flies higher...not the PGR flag, the state flag or any other flag (e.g. POW flag).
When our National Anthem is being played or sung, I am either standing saluting or with my hand over my heart. I'm not above telling some ungrateful nimrod to TAKE YOUR HAT OFF! That includes DO RAGS for the 'BROS'..and if that offends anyone...tough! Deal with it! Even bikers take their head wraps off.
Don't EVEN go waving some foreign flag in my face on American soil or you'll be wrapped in it. If you Mexicans or PRs or anyone else has a problem with that, let's talk about it! I can't fly the American flag in Mexico, so don't go waving your rag in my face in MY country! You want to fly the Mexican or any other nation's flag, go there and fly it.
Awwww did I offend someone. LIke I really care?

Yes, I am very Patriotic, and we used to stand and salute the flag every day before class at school. ALL our soldiers have died and sacrificed for our freedoms, that we have to day.
When that Yahoo ( sorry I can't remember his name, or maybe I just chose to forget) wanted to change the IN GOD WE TRUST in the salute to the flag and on our MONEY. Who in the H--- does he think he is. One man thinks he is going to change everything we stand for. Well there are MILLIONS, BILLIONS, that say otherwise.

Yes I do. Just hearing the National Anthem makes me cry. I am not worshiping my country, just respecting it.

Today I hung my flag in honor of VJ Day (which was yesterday) and left it up for Labor Day.

Incidentally, Patriot Day is 9/11/07, and POW/MIA Recognition Day is on 9/21/07. At least fly your flag to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country.

Too much nationalism is bad. Look at Germany during the the time of Hitler. They believed so strongly in germany they almost eradicated the jews. A nation has to honor itself but also analyze what it's doing. Wrong is wrong no matter who does it.

I agree! I have been at several occasions where people didn't stand, much less remove their hats. We were taught to put your hand over your heart when the flag passed in front of you. At Native American pow-wow's we have a flag song. If WE can respect it why can't others!
