Ummm...I would be willing to wager that your textbook will answer the questions you have (along with telling you that the "confederates" and the "seccesionists" were the same people). Try opening the book and reading! It works! I swear! Really!

Non-Military
Abraham Lincoln was from the North, and when he ran for President he said that any territory that wanted to become a new state should not be a slave state. People in the South who owned slaves were afraid of people who said they wanted to make it a crime to own slaves in all parts of the United States.

Salmon P. Chase
Chase was the Secretary of the Treasury during the war, and helped establish a national banking system in 1863. He also was the sixth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Chase later presided over the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson for High Crimes and misdemeanors.

Edwin M. Stanton
Attorney General for Buchanan and Lincoln, Stanton was also the attorney for the first successful temporarily insane defense in this country. Stanton was also the Secretary of War for the Lincoln Administration.

Jefferson Davis
Born in Kentucky not far from Abraham Lincoln in time or distance, the only President of the Confederacy was a decorated war veteran and politician.

Alexander Stephens
This famed orator and student of the Constitution became Vice-President of the Confederacy despite voting against the secession of Georgia.

Judah P. Benjamin
The most trusted and perhaps the most famous of Davis's Cabinet members, Judah Benjamin first held the position of Attorney General, then Secretary of War, and finally becoming the final Secretary of State of the Confederacy. Benjamin was the first Jew to become a US Senator.

Here's some names to look up.

George McClellan
Ambrose Burnside
George Meade
Ulysses Grant
William Tecumseh Sherman

Military - South

Robert E. Lee
Joseph Johnston
Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson
P.G.T. Beauregard

Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederacy, their top military leaders were Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. The President of the Union was Abraham Lincoln, the top military leaders were U.S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman. The North wins, slavery bad.

In that event, you needed to have begun your research years ago. As previously noted, Confederates and Secessionists were the same people.
I can't believe you actually asked us to tell you how it turned out. That one, to date, tops my list. You don't want to know what the list contains.
