math: men.... human beings, as soon as they started to count (fingers, heads, apples, etc), algebra is just an abstraction of counting. the best mathematicians alive are too many to write here, but here are some nambes: Misha Gromov, John Milnor, Andrew Wiles, Grisha Perelman, Yasha Sinai, T. Yau, Gang Tian, among the dead ones: Euler, Hilbert, Lagrange, Newton, Leibnitz, Gauss

The name algebra is derived from the treatise written by the Persian Muslim mathematician Muhammad bin Mūsā al-Khwārizmī titled (in Arabic الكتاب الجبر والمقابلة ) Al-Kitab al-Jabr wa-l-Muqabala (meaning "The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing"), which provided symbolic operations for the systematic solution of linear and quadratic equations.

As for math itself, that is pretty general and has probably been around since cave men tried to count mammoths they had killed.

I don't know, but I think they just did it to make themselves seem smarter, and whoever can understand that stuff is messed up worst then the ones who can't!
