It was written by Roland Barthes and it means simply that literature is something that we must delve into and discover the answers for ourselves.
Great authors don't answer life's complex questions; they pose them for the reader, present characters, settings and plots, and let the readers arrive at their own inferences/conclusions.
Great authors know that it's the questions that are important - they are the same for everyone.
But the answers must be arrived at by each individual reader - and the answers can differ considerably.
