I have 3 tomato plants that have an abundance of fruit on, however they are still green. As people in the UK will know we haven't had the best of weather as far as the sun goes so I am a bit worried that they are going to stay green.

I picked one and put it on the window sill where it gets the sun every morning, but is just went wrinkly but stayed green!

Is there anything else I can do to help them ripenI know I can make Green Tomato Chutney but would like to try a couple more things first.

Thanks

Try putting it in a paper bag. In about 3 days it should start to ripen

the best way to ripen your tomatoes is to put them in a cardboard box along with one ore two ripe eating apples.the apples must be ripe as they will give of a gas called ethral-e. this gas causes any fruit to ripen. this is how plants work not just with sun light alone.other fruit would do but the apples firm skin and the long time it will stay in good condition would be my favarite. ( a lid must be placed on the box.)

I'm lead to believe that bananas in close proximity to other fruits cause them to ripen more rapidly. May not be great advice but worth a try. You can only eat so much chutney

Don't worry, they will ripen soon enough, cut off any leaves that are shading the fruit, make sure the glass is kept clean to allow maximum sunlight into the green house. You still have time for them to ripen naturally.

They have to be at least starting to ripen for anything to work. Even then they will be red but they won't have much taste. Kind of like those you buy in the store. I am in the same boat here in Washington state.

Tomatos flip color in the dark. Put it in the closet. After the weather cools down they will start turning. I have quite a few green ones out there still but am confident by mid Sept they will have turned.
Also, stop watering them in the garden.

The best tip I can give you is to try and trap the sunlight as much as you can. Get some stiff cardboard and stick silver or orange coloured paper on it and put it to surround the plants. The cardboard must be as high as the plants.

I would leave them on the vine...as long as they look healthy. Maybe you will have some massive, award-winning sized tomatoes! Stake or tie the stems up if the tomatoes get too heavy.

Take half the toms (lightest green ones) and put on sideboard!,dish, table. The rest should then ripen. Plenty of time for this, you will have toms when no one else has.

Have you tried putting them in a paper bag and into the airing cupboard check them every couple of days, it has worked for me in the past.
