If a are the number of tickets sold for students and b the number sold to parents, we can write 3a + 6b = 375 and a + b = 79
3a + 6b = 375
3a + 3b = 237 ( 79 multiplied by 3)
Subtracting the second equation from the first,
3b = 138
b = 138 / 3 = 46
So, a = 79 - 46 = 33
So, 33 tickets were sold to students and 46 tickets were sold to parents.

33 student tickets were sold and 46 adult tickets were sold.
You can find this answer by doing the following:
First, you need to set up 2 equations, the first being 3x+6y=375, the second being x+y=79. X will represent the student tickets sold and y will represent the adult tickets sold.
From there, solve the second equation for y: y=79-x
Then plug in that equation into the first equation: 3x+6(79-x)=375
from there, use simple algebra to solve for x, then once you have found x, just put the number you got into the second equation: x+y=79.

equation:
3s+6a=375
s+a=79
a stands for adult tickets
s for student tickets
at first i tried half and half
40 6 dollar tickets and 39 3 dollar tickets and i got 357 dollar total. each adult ticket more than student ticket i sell gets a 3 dollar increase. so 375-357 equals 18 divided by 3 =6
so i did 46 6 dollar tickets and 33 3 dollar tickets
the result is 375 dollars
and 79 tickets sold

here's a hint...
x = # student tickets, y = # adult tickets
total tickets sold was 79, so
x + y = 79
also 3x = amount of $$$ made from student tickets, 6y = $$$ from all of the adult tickets
so $ from students tickets + $ from adult tickets = total $ made
3x + 6y = 375
use the first equation above to eliminate the y value in the second equation, and you will be able to solve for x, and then y........
hope this helps......

Let's just say 's' stands for students and 'a' stands for adults.
s + a = 79
3s + 6a = 375
3( 79 - a) + 6a = 375
237 - 3a + 6a = 375
237+ 3a = 375
3a = 138
a = 46
46 + s = 79
s = 33
Check:
46(6) + 33(3) = 375
Hope this helps!!!

a+b=79
3a+6b=375
a=79-b
3a=237-3b
237-3b+6b=375
237+3b=375
3b=138
b=46
a+46=79
a=33
33 student, 46 adult
to check:
33X3+46X6=375
