What items should be kept at home in case a catastrophic event occurs. By catastrophic event I mean anything from a Earthquake and Flood to a Disease Outbreak or Radiation Contamination? What basic items would be good to have on hand, especially if you were to have to fend for your self for an extended period of time?

bottled water, canned foods and a can opener, hand soap, toilet paper, a first aid kit, packages of wet washes, pet food (if you have one), candles and matches, oil lamps, blankets, keep all the family's medication in one place so you can grab it in a hurry if necessary, if you have a baby, be ure you have plenty of diapers, and all items necessary for baby's care, always keep your cell phones charged, you could get one that always stays on the charger in case of an emergency, make a plan with the family, where they are suppose to go, where the safest place wiil be. most of the items can be put in totes where you can get them in a hurry, and each person should be responsible for one or two of the totes.
