Why is it only "African American?"

My point being, you usually don't see a black person who was born and resides in Germany, or any other country calling themselves "African German" or whatever the case may be. They call themsleves German, or Irish, or English. Why only in America does this happen. Use any ethnic group you wish...Hispanic, Asian, whatever. Why, only in this country, are we "Hyphenated Americans?"

To the person who stated the following...
There are but you are not in Germany, Ireland or England to hear it... I am in Europe on a rather regular basis and know for a fact that this is not the case.

you cant usually look at someone and tell that they are irish or german, but you can normally see that someone is "american" in general.

BAL

Your lack of knowledge of the outside world is somewhat worrying.
No one in Africa calls themselves African Irish, African German etc.. because Africa is a CONTINENT NOT A COUNTRY. Therefore they refer to themselves as being Sudanese, Zimbabwean, South African, Congolese etc...

And regards England, everyone thinks of themselves as English in the black community (a few may not,but in my experince they generally get laughed at by other black people). Did you think we operate some form of apartheid with your comment of "coloureds". Sadly racism exists, but thats everywhere.

Good question.

I know several people originally born in England, yet are of Carribean, African, Indian descent (parents or grandparents born out of UK), yet they consider themselves British, not African (whatever) Canadians/Americans.

Look forward to reading some answers.

There are lots of similar things in the US. Mexican American, Irish American, German American, Italian American.

In Africa, I am sure you will find African Irish, African German and so on.

In England, you will probably find African English or they will just be called coloreds or worse.
