because the unions feel that party best reflects it's and it's member's interests.

The Democratic Party more often supports the laws that unions want. Unions want all workplaces to be heavily regulated in terms of pay and working conditions, regardless of whether the workplaces are union shops. This is what's best for their members, because if some shops are union and some aren't, the union shops with their higher wages and stricter working conditions are not competitive on price. Unions also want trade barriers so that foreign competition can't give them trouble when they get everything they want at home. Most Republicans at least claim to favor free trade, while about half of Democrats don't.

There are a few exceptions - unions that traditionally favor Republicans. The most common are police unions. Again - the Republicans are more likely to support what police unions want - more leeway to the police in how they do their jobs, more police on the streets, and tougher sentencing.

From a Craft Union Perspective:

While many Blue Collar Workers tend to have some pretty conservative PERSONAL beliefs; we tend to vote for our paycheck. There's also the hope that we can retire before we die and raise our kids instead of working 3 underpaid jobs. Many of the Craft Union jobs are so hazardous their bodies just give out long before "retirement age". If they don't die at work, they are exposed to enough toxins daily that they've got permanent health issues that cut their lifespan by at least 20 years. We need our Union negotiated Health Insurance because it's the only plan we can afford or qualify for.

Republicans tend to be pro-big business which is the antithesis of the working man's interests. Don't forget one of the biggest Anti-Union/Working Man presidents was Reagan (Rep); we sure haven't.

It was the Republicans who wanted to change the "work week" to 80 hours in two weeks, thus getting rid of a lot of overtime costs. There are many Craft Union members who work 84 hours in one week (7/12s) and then none the second week.

Are people really this clueless? There is a simple, scientific answer to this question.

There is a right and a left in politics. To the EXTREME left is socialism. To the EXTREME right is facism. Most people are pretty close to the center, but they lean to either the right or the left of the line.

The Democratic Party is to the left of the line, so they tend to favor socialistic ideas without being total socialists. However, since unions are by their very nature and definition socialistic, the Democrats will tend to identify with them more, and therefore, align themselves with unions.

Is that so hard to understand?

People to the right of that line, Republicans, want to see the company be able to keep some of the money that is today going to higher wages for union people, not so the "greedy corporate types can get their grubby paws on it," but so they can afford to hire more people, thus creating jobs. Not only that, but it kills two birds with one stone by keeping inflation down.

This idea that Democrats are for the working man is total crap. If that were true, the Democrats wouldn't be doing everything they can to raise taxes to the point where we will owe money to withholding rather than receiving a paycheck every two weeks.

Kick backs and yet another good reason unions are not good.

I love how these people think that the democrats are for the working people. Hillary wants to take the profits away from the oil companies (for her own pocket) but she hasn't thought of how many working people will lose their jobs if she succeeds with her plans.

Yep those democrats really work for the working people.

Traditionally the Democratic party is for the working person, farmer and immigrant. The Republican party has always tended to favor the elite, the wealthy, business executives.

There have been some in each party who don't follow that philosophy but generally it is the way it has been from the very beginning.

If American corporations felt that average employees were as important as shareholders and the elite tier of overpaid executives, unions would be unnecessary.

As it is now, the bulk of employees are treated as cattle whose wages should be minimized.

If globalism and corporate greed remain unchecked, the American middle class will become an endangered species.

because Republicans have a history for protecting businesses. Democrats are generally middle class working people. Why would any blue collar person vote Republican? The only reason would be the propaganda that is directed at religious people saying that the Republican party is the party of faith....it's not by the way, no matter what you hear

Democrats are seen generally as the party of the working people. They usually support shorter hours for workers, more protections for employees, more insurance, and more regulations of the corporate bosses.

Republicans are usually less willing to regulate the economy, freeing the corporations up to make more money and pay the employees less money. Republicans also generally see unions as a kind of mob attack on the free market. It's not that the GOP hates workers, it's that in their economic philosophy they think that allowing corporations to make more money in the free market benefits everyone. The GOP would also generally argue that lower wages means less unemployment and higher "real wages".

Because the unions pay the Dems BIG bucks during the elections and they get favors and concessions when they are elected. Case in point look at the CA public service unions: they receive 80 % retirement based on their pay which is the best the country. Our Federal employees are very well taken care of by the deals they made by their union. The rest of us suck wind. Can you spell C-O-R-R-U-P-T?
