The goalie also has some additional protection from the other players. The goalie is vulnerable during play, exposing himself while going after the ball. The different color ensures that players and refs can see him easily, so that players will know a bit easier where he is.

The goalie isn't allowed to wear team colors so they stand out and you know they aren't a regular player. Goalies jerseys cannot match the referees or either of the teams playing. That's so you can't have a "keeper sweeper" or "butterfly goalie". [Where whoever is closest to the goal uses their hands, no set goal keeper] It didn't really originate, it just kind of happened when players started confusing their goalies with regular players or referees.

Don't know where it started, but the reason is that they have to look different from the other players because they can use their hands, while other players can't. This way, even at a distance, the ref can tell the goalie apart from the other players.

actually this didn't always used to be so. when the game was first originated the designated player was the only player on the field who wore a cap (this is why it is still legal in the rules to do so today, as you may see some goal-keepers wearing them to see better). Back then it was not as much for visibility as to make them distinguishable from their teammates. Soon as the sport developed further, players started to switch to a different kit to make things more easily noticed.

The goalkeeper has a slightly different uniform from the rest of the team; the jersey has to be a different color as he is the only one allowed to use his hands in the game. The difference in the goalkeeper's uniform is necessary so that viewers and players can easily recognize which player he is. The goalkeepers usually use special gloves for defending the ball.

The referee and his assistants also need different colour uniforms so that they aren't mistaken for any other player in the field. Players also use protections such as shin pads which can also be included as part of the uniform.
