I would choose a rabbit. A lot of people misunderstand rabbits. Rabbit have tons of personality. They can be litter box trained and can be tought to do many things. I trained one of my rabbits so that when I give him a pellet, he runs inside, making it easy to put him back.
Both of my rabbits know their names and come when I say them.
Rabbits can not live in a small area. My 2 rabbits live in 6 foot by 4 foot enclosure that I made. They get at least 4 hours a day of exercise and at least 1-2 hours of playtime with humans.
Rabbits are truly the perfect pet.

Give us a lot more information.
Do you have a yard? A FENCED yard? If so, maybe a dog would be okay, bur remember... to keep a dog happy takes a lot of work and a lot of walks. Just dumping them in the yard is not enough.
Between a cat and a rabbit is a harder choice. Cats jump up on countertops and can break things. Rabbits don't. If your family has a lot of breakable knick-knacks, then a rabbit might be a better idea.
Also, if your mom is planning to get pregnant again, I'd say get a rabbit instead of a cat (pregnant women aren't supposed to be around kitty litter).
However... if you are planning to get a dog in the future, don't get a rabbit now. Most dogs will kill rabbits, and unlike cats, the rabbits don't have much chance for self-defense or escape.

Here's a short discription of each:
Dog: Perhaps the most interactive of pets, dogs are very social. They need daily walks and also need to be bathed every once in a while.
Cat: Cats do not need as much interaction of dogs and are best when you adopt two that get along, to keep each other company. They, like dogs, are fun to play with and enjoy being petted. They need litterboxes.
Rabbit: The least demanding, rabbits reside in a small cage. They like to hop around the house and can be trained to use a type of 'litterbox' as well.
If you're up for the challenge, I'd choose a dog, but if you are a first-time pet owner, I'd choose a cat.

I would say to get a cat because they are not that hard to take care of. Dogs need to be walked allot and rabbits are so hard to take care of, I have had three and they all died from problems with there digestive systems. One bad thing that they eat will cause major problems. I recommend if you do by chance get a rabbit to read the book for them first.

Depends on how much room and time you have for the animal. Dogs are high maintance and get lonely if you don't spend enough time with them. Cats are way more independent but still need attention. I've never owned a rabbit but I would think they would be a lot of work only with having to clean out there cages. Not so much having to spend time with them. So as an animal lover get one you can take care of to the best of your ability.

Rabbit smell and take a lot work, cleaning the cage, boring pet. I say dog or cat, depending on your lifestyle.

First research each animal thoroughly before deciding. There are some pet shops (Petco, Pet Smart. To name just a couple) that allow the public to interact with the animals they have on site. Some animal shelters have foster programs that allow the public to take in animals, you have the opportunity to see how each animal fits in with your home life, then you can return them guilt free if it doesn't work out. Asking the people here was a good idea. Try going to ask.com and ask people you come into contact with on a daily basis. Consider all expenses for each type of animal, what can you reasonably afford.

well...it really depends on your lifestyle, and how much money and time you have to spend with the animal
Dogs are very loyal, fun, can be taught tricks, and are just really fun to have around....they do need anual vet trips, walked everyday, and are very expensive
Cats are cuddly, smart, indipendent, playful, but they can't really learn anything, and are pretty moody, will turn on you in a second
Rabbits are cheap, and very cute, but they don't really like being held, they are happier just sitting next to you, they poop ALOT, and smell pretty bad
So, I would probably reccomend a cat for a first pet for you, I wouldn't reccomend a rabbit or dog, unless you give us a few more details about your life
