I was really shocked this summer to find that our grocery stores market imported fruits and vegetables and no longer seem to support our local farmers.

A case of strawberries grown locally was going for $3.99 while imported strawberries from 1,000 miles away--rotten as they were--were selling for $1.49 for almost twice as much.

It's clear too these inferior strawberries were genetically engineering and they were moldy and rotting, as is most of the fruits and veggies in these "no name" stores. Even in the the overpriced "S" chains the fruit is imported, not even close to ripe.

Whatever happened to these big chains supported our local FARMERS?

This is unnacceptable. I went up to the produce manager and complained and I am informing other people about it too, because we should not be supporting these chains who have no concern for us or our wellbeing only making a buck and supporting interests of the countries they are owned by.

Do you agree we should buy from locals?

I find I am shopping in various places now (butcher for meat, produce store for fresh food, fish market for fish, bread from bakery, deli for cold cuts, etc.) just to get FRESH and QUALITY for your money. GOD ONLY KNOWS what garbage is on your produce from countries half way across the planet.

And yes I realize you cannot get EVERYTHING from locals, but certainly when fresh strawberries/apples/pears/peaches/ corn/ potatoes/greens etc. are grown locally, why buy stuff that is WEEKS old when it is only days old coming from an hour away?

Think of the POLLUTION cut back and transport trucks that we can get off the highway in doing so TOO!!!!

Wrong netr...we don't care about CHEAP in Canada we want QUALITY and we are willing to pay for it....problem is the B's know that and RIP US OFF....local IS CHEAPER....they just jack up the price because they are A-holes.

They are trying to KILL our local farming is why they sell their garbage cheaper....NOT because it's better.

Exactly Uncle Dud....not only is it your JOB you will lose but some day you will be starving and have lost the capacity to support yourself. No such thing as farmers anymore as they will be bankrupted.

Sure, I buy local produce on the rare occasion that it's available in the grocery store. I like it when a tomato was grown in the same state and actually looks and tastes like it grew in a field of tomatoes. Plus it's better for the environment to avoid shipping foods from thousands of miles away. I just don't seem to be willing to go a long way out of my way to buy local.

we've a farmer's industry in Powell River on Saturdays and Sundays. The hours are short (2 each and every day), besides the undeniable fact that this is honestly worth a visit. you will get tea, espresso and living house baked candies to munch in case you're traveling the stalls or get an entire breakfast from between the conventional distributors. there's a small degree at one end of the industry with seats the place you are able to relax for awhile and hear close by entertainers play and sing. from time to time, the sq. dance club will placed on exhibitions. Powell River has a number of components that are solid for farming. Produce incorporates eye-catching vegetation, leafy lettuce and crisp carrots to point in basic terms some. because of the fact the industry is comparatively small, you are able to desire to get there early to have the final decision. My universal nutrition is the sparkling baked bread from Boule Breads. She makes them the nighttime previously and that they are comfortable and moist interior and crisp crusted exterior. The multigrain sourdough is the final. I finally end up tearing into the loaf as I walk around, so I constantly get 2. One for munching and one to take living house for the week. Our farmer's industry has particular activities in the time of the summer season. the final is the final Fall honest. There are greater distributors, video games for the infants, pony cart rides and contests for the final produce, crafts etc. So notwithstanding if this is for a weekly purchasing holiday, an day holiday for travellers or a particular experience, we actually delight in our close by farmers and the industry they provide. this is a brilliant public provider. -- Margy

Perhaps what is more unnacceptable to you is that your grocery store can import food from half way around the world and deliver it too you for less then your local farmer can grow it. Most of the time its better too - I know your example was they were worse but lets face it 9/10 times its just as good.

Whenever I can in the summer I ALWAYS...buy local from Ontario, i have a booklet that tells you where in Ontario there are local grown grocers for veggies. That is why I was appaled at some farmers markets that have their products from other sources rather than Ontario.

I stop at the local fruit markets from time to time, if that counts...

no because the extra gas consumption it takes to get to the market is bad for the environment.
