This means that there is a fragment of a file that is separated from another file. Defrag is important
and should be done weekly. This will make the computer run faster!!

After repeated use the files on your hard drive get scattered.

That's because when the file is originally opened it is a particular size and fits into a particular area of your disk. The file is held in RAM while you work on it. When it comes time to close the file the computer writes as much data as it can back to it's original location but the file is bigger than it originally was so the left over data is written elsewhere on the disk. Like I said earlier, over time the files became scattered or fragmented. This can slow down your system and make the hard drive work much harder. It's always a good idea to defragment your disk often.

Defragmenting your disk will not harm anything. In fact it will increase performance.

Hope this helps,
Captain Computer

Imagine an orderly room. Over time the room becomes disorganized and it takes you longer to find certain things. Given enough time things get mixed up and you can't find anything at all. Once you straighten things out, you find things faster again, increasing your efficiency.

This is what happens to your hard drive through daily use. File are moved and sometimes bits of them become seperated and it takes your pc longer to find the pieces. This is called fragmentation.

All de-fragmentation does is put those files back together again. Windows has an option that analyzes your hard drive and lets you know if you need to defrag. The process does not destroy your files; it enables them to run more efficiently.

When the computer writes to the disk, it doesn't necessarilly wirte the file all to one location. It can be spread to different areas of the disk... each chunk of the file is called a fragment. Defrag rearranges the data on the disk so the files are all together in one location to make the system run more efficiently. Defrag does not destroy anything. Do it... but it takes a while (up to several hours depending on size of drive, amount of data, etc.) so be patient.

When you delete files you create open spots on your drive. If you install a program it will fill those open spots. If you delete a bunch of pics, vids and little programs for example, then put a 200MB program in it will install it in maybe 20 different places instead of all together thus its fragmented(in pieces). Your hard drive has to seek all over your hard drive to run that program which makes it run worse and deceases the life of your drive. When you do a defrag it takes those pieces of programs and lumps them together in one spot instead of, say, 20 different ones. When cleaning up a hard drive always uninstall your programs and delete files before you do a defrag or else you'll be back to installing fragmented programs if you dont.

a defraged disk drive is just something that isnt organized. To you it seems organized, but a word document of yours may be on the other side of the disk from another one. Which makes it very annoying for the hard drive. the defragmenter just puts things together on the hard drive so it can find things quicker.

You definitely want to defragment your files.

When files are created, and especially when they are later modified, the information is stored on different sections of your disk.

You should back up all of your files on a regular basis. Critical files each time you modify them, and others weekly.
