The cost of living in the Virgin Islands is higher than average costs in cities across the US mainland. Recent documents published by the Virgin Islands Legislature estimated that the cost of living in the Virgin Islands is on average 33% higher then most US jurisdictions.

having lived here ( St Thomas) 30 years I'd say 33 % is about right.....US Gov workers posted here get a 28% COLA.......biggest differences are: electricity here is just shy of 30 cents a kWh while most of the mainland is 12 or so; in the 75 unit condo I run its not unusual for a 1 bedroom apt to have a $350 a month power bill......

rents; St Thomas is a small island in great demand.....a decent one bedroom apt is 1200-1800 a month; a one bedroom house is 250-350,000

gasoline this morning is 3.78 a gallon; milk brought in from Stateside is more!


Other than that: no heating bills, no winter wardrobe and you never ever ever have to pay someone to plow the driveway!
