Michael Collins - Irish Patriot and Freedom Fighter, may very well have been shot by forces within the IRA who were opposed to him.
It is very unlikely that the British would have had a hand in his murder since he and they had pulled off a deal which satisfied both sides at the time, that is, the six northern most counties of Ireland to remain British.
Michael Collins RIP

He wouldn't have been killed by the brits either way. Collins was killed in the Emergency, A euphemism for the Irish Civil War. this was fought over the acceptance or not or a treaty involving the partition of Ireland whereby the bris retained the Six Counties And the Creation of the Free State. The Free Statee was not the Republic as envisaged by De Valera and others who couldnot accept Collins view that it was a stepping stone to unity. As A result whilsat we fought England used the excuse of our war ro renege on those provisions of the treaty that allowed for the review of the position in the north.
As part of an increasingly bitter campaign Collins venturesd into hostile territory and was killed by an Irishman of whichever faction. His death undoubtedly deprived Ireland of a great leader whose role is perhaps best summed up by De Valera, the man who opposed him who said that when history judged himself and Collins it wouuld probably be to his(De Valera's ) Detriment

On the road to Bandon, at the village of Béal na mBláth (Irish, "the Mouth of Flowers"), Collins' column stopped to ask directions. However the man whom they asked, Dinny Long, was also a member of the local Anti-Treaty IRA. An ambush was then prepared for the convoy when it made its return journey back to Cork city. They knew Collins would return by the same route as the two other roads from Bandon to Cork had been rendered impassable by Republicans. The ambush party, allegedly commanded by Liam Deasy, had mostly dispersed to a nearby pub by 8pm, when Collins and his men returned to Beal na mBlath but the remaining five ambushers opened fire on the convoy. The ambushers had laid a mine on the scene, which could have killed many more people in Collins' party, however they had disconnected it by the time the firing broke out

just like to say to whoever it was in their answer said that The Emergency refered to Ireland during the Civil War it didnt it refered to Ireland during WW2.
To answer the actual question nobody knows for sure. Many think DeValera had him killed, other think it was an accident, that one of his own killed him during the ambush and then their are the ones that think it was the english. Personally I would think it was an Irish man be it an accident or not, but as I said no one knows for sure.

It probably depends on which side you happen to be on Irish will say British every time as they would never admit to doing it themselves. I'm sure there are sites you can access which can give you a more definitive answer.
