Through using the red shift theory.
Red shift means light received from distant galaxies is shifter towards the red end of the spectrum and thus indicating long wavelengths and that the galaxies are moving away. THe more red-shifted the light is, the faster the object is moving away. Scientists measure this over time and comparing light years and work backwards. They also use background radiation and the doppler effect to help. They estimate that its between 12-15 billion years old.

These assumtions are not shared by all. For example, there are estimates indicating youth.
