Labor Day started in 1882 when the Central Labor Union urged employers to create a day off for the "working man." The Knights of Labor organized the first Labor Day Parade in September 1882 in New York City. Congress made the day an official holiday in 1894.

Admittedly, May Day, or May 1st, is the usual Labor Day for most industrialized countries, but that would put too much of a socialist spin on the holiday for the United States. Besides, Labor Day traditionally signals the end of summer and the start of school for Americans.

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday that takes place on the first Monday in September. The holiday began in 1882, originating from a desire by the Central Labor Union to create a day off for the "working man". It is still celebrated mainly as a day of rest and marks the symbolic end of summer for many. Labor Day became a federal holiday by Act of Congress in 1894.
