LOL the question isn't why they were playing a low ranked team all the big ten schools play a lower division team their opening game ...the real question is WHY DIDN'T MICHIGAN WIN?!?! lol And if it wouldn't seem fair to anyone it would be the lower division team LOL
It's really a trade off, the bigger school gets to whallop someone to get them revved up for the other big schools, and the smaller division school gets exposure and revenue from the game...BUT BOY DID APPALACHIAN STATE GET EXPOSURE!! LOL
GO GREEN!

For Jeffrow..
lol Yeah Appalachian State may probably be better than UAB but uhhhh isn't Michigan suppose to be better than Appalachian State..at least we did what was expected :-P and State is Ranked LOWER than MICHIGAN!

michigan university paid Appalachian State $400,000 to come play them basically so that the Mountaineers could get national exposure and play a big college team from a power conference. Essentially Michigan need a tune up game against a weaker opponent so that their players could get some real game time action instead of playing each other in practice. All of the other major teams schedule cupcake teams for the first 2 or 3 weeks of the season. It ended up backfiring.

I went to Appalachian State and was an athlete there. I attended both of their National Championship games. They are a great team! Even though they are 1-AA, I've always thought that they could compete with some big teams! My friends always disagreed with me saying that there's no way that they could compete with the bigger size of 1-A teams. I had so many people call me and text me after that game and apologize that they doubted them! I don't think they are necessarily ready for 1-A but I think they showed a lot of people that being #1 in 1-AA does mean something!!! I'm so proud of my Mountaineers!!!!

A few years ago, the NCAA, added a game to the schedule. A warmup game. the division 1 A schools, usually pick a smaller division 1 AA school to play, ALMOST insuring victory boosting their team morale while adding a W, to the column and, keeping their boosters and, supporters happy.
whoever scouted Appalachian State, really screwed up or, just wasn't paying attention. I don't know how You would miss 2 consecutive division 1 AA national titles and, a 15 game winning streak.

I hear it's like the big programs' preseason to play teams from lower divisions (though the games DO count towards their regular season record). I don't know how common it is among most of the conferences but I'm pretty sure the Big-10 does it a lot (obviously after what happened in Michigan) and I KNOW the Pac-10 does it every year (last year Stanford lost to a lower division school).

It was supposed to be a tune up game. Michigan payed Appalachian St a lot of money to come to the Big House and have some fun against App State. Weren't they dissapointed? They payed for their own defeat.

lots of teams besides michigan do it for first game. it is kinda of more like a practice game than a real game. similar to a high school jamboree, or pro- pre season game. it gives michigan a "sure win, easy victory" to start off the season. it gives michigan coaches a chance to try lots of players in real game situation. michigan should be able to get many of the newest, youngest players into the game. michigan should be able to make many of the "first game of the year" mistakes and still get the win. it is a warm up game for the real season that begins the 2nd week.

to App States credit, they had won natinoal championship in their division for 2 years in a row, so, they are a good team. better than michigan expected.

the App State and other low rank opponents, like to play this kind of game because, they get a big paycheck from michigan to play. they get national exposure , they get to play in a big-time stadium. they have nothing to lose, everybody expects them to lose.

check it out...ALOT of teams were playing Division IAA....including the likes of....Ohio State, Hawaii and Alabama....U of M was the only one who had the balls to face the BEST of the worst. From what I understand that team has won the so called "IAA National Championship" two years in a row....and is obviously working on it's third....and for all of you *** clowns from across the state of Michigan...mostly those in East Lansing....I guarantee App. State is a better team than UAB...

Does it really matter. They blew it anyway. Michigan played like crap, I was there to see it all. No excuses about playing such a low ranked team.
