I understand I need a special Moen tool to remove the cartridge from a tub faucet.

I can't remove the screw that goes through the center of the plastic faucet handle. It's a single-handle faucet that has broken.

The screw rotates either left or right when I turn it with a screwdriver, but it won't loosen.

Any suggestions?

moen has 2 types of cartridges, magnum or positemp. With the magnum cartridge you pull out on handle then turn left or right to adjust temp. Positemp usually turns counterclockwise to turn on and adj. temp. With that said, both handles look similar but will not interchange. If you have magnum type, center of cartridge will continually spin till end of time. What you willneed to do is break or cut handle off so you can get to brass part of cartridge that attaches to handle. Once that is done you can hold cartridge (stem) and remove screw.Hope that helps. A cartridge puller does make it easier to remove cartridge but not nessisary, turn off all water to house to house, remove U- shaped pin, pull w/pliers
