I'm writing a book. I'm looking for a non-poisonous natural gas that could possible be released from the ground during an earth quake. Or a non-poisonous gas that is manufactured would do as well. Thanks so much.

I'm looking for a non-toxic gas, natural or man made. Can you suggest any?

I'm sorry. I forgot to mention that it can't be flammable either.

Well during an earthquake gas from residential lines are likely to be split and leak, above all things this gas is flammable, which is a far more dangerous property than being poisonous, outside it would diffuse in the air far too quickly to asphyxiate you. Natural gas in the form of ethane, propane, butane or methane is found in residential lines, none of which are directly poisonous unless it’s in a higher concentration than the air around you so you can’t breathe or if it blows you up. Methane is the most common natural gas, commercially any of the above is used depending on the specific requirements.

The risk would only be if your character(s) were in a confined/poorly ventilated place (not outside), and the gas was in a high enough concentration.

What kind of school do you go to where you have to write an essay on anti-freeze? I had to write essays about "The Heart of Darkness". What a stupid book. Antifreeze protects your raditor by helping to keep the liquid inside the radiator in a liquid-state. If you put all water in the radiator, then in sub-zero temperatures (like at night in a snowy place) then all the water would freeze and bust up your radiator. If the liquid boils while the car is running, then it doesn't move as much heat around the system causing too much heat buildup in the engine block. I don't know the answers to the other ones.

Ethane or methane, are non-toxic natural gases
that might be released from underground reservoirs.
Ethylene is a lot rarer.
CO2 is commonly released in volcanic events.
Caution, while these gases are non-toxic, they are
suffocants.
If they crowd out enough oxygen they will still
disable or kill.
