I don't really know that much about computers but I'm buying a new laptop and the one I want has a 1.5GHz Core2Duo processor. It has enough RAM (2GB) and video memory(256MB) to run the games I want to play but will the processor be able to handle a game like Battlefield 2(requires 1.7 GHz) and run it smoothly?

Yes, it should. Performance is more than just about speed. The Core 2 Duo has a better instruction set, so it should be faster than a Pentium 4 of a comparable speed.

Intel really needs to dig itself out of the hole it dug about the mega hertz myth that thing is comparable to a 3.0ghz+ Pentium D due to reverting back to the Pentium pro based processors instead of the created for clock speeds(marketing FTW) net burst architecture
(intel went crazy forgoing all efficiency for raw speed as a late Pentium 4 is slower that the previous core Pentium 4(as a 3.75ghz PresscHot EE(30 stage pipe) is slower than a 3.5ghz galatin(identical to northwood except 2mb L3 cache 20 stage pipe)(it ain't the instruction sets that make these things faster (northwood had up to SSE2 while the PresscHot had up to SSE3)
in similar terms don't judge graphics cards by their memory as the graphics core must have enough power to utilize it because memory is only useful in high resolutions(textures or screen)it needs to output enough to be able make it usable instead of sitting there half empty.

it will run.. but the performance.. im not quite sure.. but since u have 2GB of ram.. i think it should run smoothly.. core2 1.5Ghz mean it have 2 processor of 1.5GHz.. the processor fastest speed still 1.5GHz. but since the computer have 2 of its.. it can processed data two time faster than single processor with 1.5GHz.. which mean it can processed data that need 1.7GHz faster..

video games are depandant on the amount of ram on your sytem and the graphic card you are using.plz ensure your system has 2 gb of ram to play games smoothly.if you play games are low resolutions then i think it will run smoothly on a system with low spec

If the game says 1.7Ghz then get the 1.7Ghz if or better yet get the 2Ghz (T7200) if you can afford.
Its always good to give headroom and not choke the system.

If you want to do gaming please get a processor bigger then 2Ghz.
It worth it have a look at this link.

yes.. you can..... because core due have double processing speed (means 1.5Gh means it will be 3.0Gh....)
