I have this Mercedes-Benz 1991, 190E, 2.6. It is a rear wheel drive and all my friends have been scaring me- "it would be a bad car for winter. It does snow in Omaha, Nebraska quite a bit. So...my question to friends is- What can I do about it? I thought of buying a 4x4 truck or cheap, old Jeep Wrangler or an SUV. After winter, I can sell it back with minimum depreciation. (I may be wrong in my calculations).
I know, it will be more expensive to "winterize" my Merc.
Any input or feedback from friends here will be appreciated.
Good Luck and God Bless You All.

Winterize it with ( tirerack.com ) A set of winter tires on a set of used Mercedes Benz steel wheels. Use the summer tires for summer. Besides that car is due for replacement in a couple of years anyway. Rear wheel drive cars do ok and it give you and excuse to take the bad snow days off work. My 400 hp Pontiac GTO really does not like slippery roads. Or a 350Z Nissan take your car out for a spin! Mercedes Benz are driven all over germany in the snow so don't listen to your friends practice out in the wall mart parking lot the first snow have a spin on me!

I've done this for 20 years, but I never trade around SUV's. They're too low-performance and too expensive. There's no such thing as a cheap SUV or truck. Selling one every year would be a huge hassle. Not worth it.

What I look for in a winter beater is a reliable car with loooooow resale value. I used to use oldsmobiles (front wheel drive, of course) but I have since switched to Chryslers.

Try to find a 94-97 Chrysler LHS. They all had front wheel drive and traction control. It's a great performing car. Lots of power, good gas mileage, and it even looks good. You can probably find one without anything wrong with it for about $1500.

how did people ever get around in snow before they had front wheel drive cars? they either had a 4 wheel drive jeep (not many people had those) or a rear wheel drive vehicle, they put snow tires on them and added some weight in the trunk and they went on down the road not even thinking twice about it, I learned how to drive on a rear drive car and they will go just as good as a front driver if you know how to drive them.

Unless you need to drive through deep snow, considering MPG, I would opt for an inexpensive front wheel drive car.
