If you want the absolute least expensive - then you would be looking for motels that are independently owned, not associated with a major chain. Of course there is that "get what you pay for" chance that you take. Many can be very nice though - if all you look for is a bed and shower.
If you are one that likes to have a reservation before hand, then I would suggest "Motel 6" or "Super 8" motels. They tend to be the least expensive, but still have to maintain standards set by the franchise.
As far as which states. I would really suggest not staying in the major urban areas like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles. Motels in the less populated areas are going to always be your best deal.

Price ??? In some areas, the least expensive may be $30. And in others, is could be as high as $60. Obviously this is somewhat of a guess. But I travel 45 of the 52 weeks a year.
Keep in mind that many motels now offer a continental breakfast, included in the room rate.
Also, there is a website:
www.tripadvisor.com
in which you can plug in a city, and it will show reviews of motels that people have submitted. This will show motel rates also.

I just moved from New Jersey to Portland Oregon via car. I got a book called Cheap Sleeps. It's a guide that gives a list of motels that are typically $50 or less. Say you want to stay in Ashville North Carolina, You go to the North Carolina section of the book, then go to Ashville. It tells you what amenities are provided. Sometimes, motels are more expensive during the weekend or special events or holidays, or just because of the location (major cities for example), but it usually notes that. It provides a phone number and if I remember correctly, an address. I also recommend getting AAA. Some motels give you a discount if you present the card.

Motel 6 and Super 8 are pretty cheap. Holiday Inn is usually reasonable unless it is in a tourist area. I live in Destin, Florida and Holiday Inn can run just as much as staying at the Hilton. It just depends on the location as to how much you will pay. Of course in the middle of nowhere will be a lot cheaper than staying in the city or by the beach. You can go to the Yahoo Travel site and type in a city and state and it will give you links to hotels with prices. Hope this helps.

Well, it's going to depend on where/when you are visiting.. Generally, major cities the hotels are going to be more expensive.. Chains like Sheraton, Radisson, Windsor are typiscally 4 star hotel chains.. Middle of the road are Holiday Inn, Quality Inn/Days Inn... We found that Red Roof was very resonable I think around $50 a night.. Days/Quality were around $100.. Depending on the ammenities... I'm in Cleveland, Ohio staying here would be somewhere in the middle.. Also, if you are visiting depending on how long it may help you to get AAA service it's for your car/vehicle and it offers hotel/travel discounts on many, many attractions/hotels it also covers towing and dead battery and even if you run out of gas.. So, it's good if you are going to be on the road you don't have to come up with tow money on the spot... It's about $80 for the yr. but, if you are traveling it's so worth it and most states have a AAA visitor's office to help with buying attraction tickets at a discounted price and you can get hotel rates about 10% cheaper as well... I would maybe suggest renting an RV and staying on that while you are traveling that way you wouldn't have to worry about accomodations.. Your more expensive cities are New York, San Fransico, Chicago.. Good luck and have fun..

I'm in Georgia. Motel 6 is usually very inexpensive. There are some as low as $18.99 a night, BUT places like that are likely to have roaches and other bugs. Some of the nice ones can have them as well. If I were traveling in Georgia, I'd budget about $45 a night. If you are coming for a visit, make sure you check out the room (for cleanliness, the heat/air works, plenty of towels, ect.) they are offering BEFORE you pay.
Good luck and best wishes.
