When I lived in Brasil, I absolutely loved Sao Paulo - big city indeed. There is much to do and see and many opportunities there (that's why so many folks migrate there from the rest of Brasil...and the rest of South America). Not to say that it doesn't have it's problems, but if you're smart and careful, it is a great place to be.
I have a friend from Curitiba who says that is the best city in Brasil - and I've never heard anything bad about that place. After doing some research, he just may be correct that Curitiba is the best city to live in.
I don't have much experience in Rio, but I liked to visit there. It seems that the class separation is more visible there.
If you like smaller towns, I would highly recommend Campo do Jordao. A 'mountain' town a couple of hours from Sao Paulo.

Sao Paulo is nice, compared to Rio it doesn't have the beach as close, but it does have plenty of other big city things go do, which are a bit lacking in Rio. Also Sao Paulo isn't as hot, has a much better public transportation system than Rio. I hear that Curitiba is a great city also. The cultural mix in SP is amazing, since you have people there from all over the world, and great food too.

Brazil is full of big cities - roughly 1 million or more. In addition to the most obvious, Rio and São Paulo, you also have Campinas, Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, Manaus and Belém. Perhaps only the last two, in the Amazon, fail to meet your general criteria. You should be aware, however, that nearly all Brazilian cities have their hot spells in the summer. There are even a movie and a song entitled "Rio 40 Graus."

Both Sao Paulo and Rio are very violent, but if you are careful and follow the lead of local friends you make you should be OK. Other options to consider are Salvador, Fortaleza or Recife - very laid back yet vibrant big cities with great people, cuisine, beaches, music, culture and nature.

Depends on the kind of life you want to lead, but I point out: São Paulo ( Is a city well-stirred) Rio de Janeiro ( Has many beaches and is very hot in Rio) Blumenau ( Is a beautiful and peaceful city, the city has a beautiful architecture, and is quite cold there) Florianopolis ( Has beautiful places to visit and many beaches) These cities are good in my opinion.

Go to Florianopolis. This city is very rich, it´s a island with one of the most beautiful nature that I´ve seen in Brazil. It has a beautiful "mini desert of white sand", It´s very sunny, and girls are extremely beautiful. But they are blond with blue eyes. If you want dark people, Fortaleza has the same characteristics, and it is very hot. There is a lot of enterprises, glanced buildings, big and tropical Amusement parks, excellent hotels and thousands of desert beaches.
