If you're just going to have one you could even start with a 5 gallon. They are very hardy fish and do not require alot of special treatment. I used to work at an aquarium for a couple years. It really depends how big they fish is when you get him.

you can keep them in a 10 gallon tank at first but since they can grow up to 4.5inches a 20 gallon tank would best suit them.
