What kind of holiday, a religious one or an official one?
As far as I know August 15 is a religious day for Greek Cypriots. August 16 used to be the anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus. But Greek Cypriots changed the date to October 1st for some reason that I don't know.
I have never heard of August 14 though.

Well august 14 is the anniversary of the Helios airplane crash which killed more than 100 cypriots->but an anniversary.

On the night of august 14, Orthodox Christians go to a sperino (i forgot how to say it in english-> i hate it when that happens) for the next day which is the day that the Virgin Mary went to sleep.
