This question is only open to those who know about dogs please dont answer wrong because answering wrong means taking risk with my dogs life...Actually the vet says he has got severe gasteriris followed by viral. My dog is critical and has not taken in food from TEN days!!!!!!!!!!! Can u believe it 10 days. Whenever we do force feeding he vomits it. Whenever we offer him food he walks away. He is a golden retrievier and is 4 years old . He is really weak. The vets had said last week that he would die. But fortunately as my mum and dad were doctors so they put him on the iv line. He has to be put on it for 3 hours every other day. When we consulted another vet then he was surprised to know that our dog had not eaten any food from ten days.We have tried all types of vaccination....As directed by the vet we brought his choicest foods like vanilla ice cream, egg yolk, milk cake, custard, banana, boiled sweets, chicken etc. Inspite of all this he refuses to eat He also has depression

No ice cream or anything with sugar in it.

If he has gastritis he needs to be on an antibiotic. When my "Shortie" had gastritis, he went on cephalexin (not sure what the British name would be--it is related to penicillin, our brand name here is Keflex).

He should also be on an acid inhibitor like famotadine.

Reglan (metaclopramide) will help the stomach empty and will get him the nutrition without as much stress on the stomach.

And he should be eating a very neutral diet. My vet had us give Shortie a special dry kibble made of potatoes and venison. (Smelled pretty tasty, but we didn't try it.)

Shortie also took sucralfate which is to help heal gastric ulcers. It cannot hurt and it may be that the dog needs it.

As for viral issues, antibiotic will not help that, but you can try L-Lysine which comes in a veterinary paste that you may be able to get him to take.

Stop the human food and give him a good special diet, follow the antibiotic and other drug regimen and your dog has a shot at getting better.

Don't worry about the depression, he just feels sick. That will go away when he gets well.

Good luck with this--and have faith. My vet told me one of our kittens would not make it, but he didn't give up and neither did we. And the kitten is doing great! (So is Shortie....)

A word to the wise, next time don't wait ten days. One full day is enough to justify attention! (And find a new vet--if all it is is an infection, it's treatable! And the dog is suffering....)

Have you guyz had x-rays done? You need to make sure all of the possible diagnostics have been done. If the vet hasn't done it although you CAN afford the costs, I would suggest changing to a new vet. If you can't afford it, then the vet is bound legally and you have to figure out some way to get money to be able to do all the diagnostics. Either way, fluids given everyother day to this dog will not save his life, and eventually even on those, he will die. There has to be an underlining condition why he is not eating. You just haven't found the right reason yet.

Hon I so sorry your golden boy is in such sad shape. I would not feed those things though. Just some ground beef and rice, or ground chicken and rice until he starts to eat a bit more. The things you have been trying to feed him would also make him throw up.

Please have you mom and dad find a new vet to help your boy out. I'm not a vet but I have bred Goldie's for many years and have never heard of this kind of problem before. There has to be a medical reason for him to be so sick!

I wish all the very best of luck with Your Golden boy! I hope he feels better very soon!

I'm so sorry to hear this.....I don't' know how much I can help you, but I will share an experience I had that may possible help.

Years ago, I had a doberman who was very sick like this. He was vomiting and he had very watery diarrhea....I took him to the vet several times....I can't remember everything that was done, but I was very worried and my dog lost a lot of weight and acted very lethargic....not himself at all, so I knew he felt horrible. I know the vet did blood tests and xrays....he was thinking it could be related to his liver....but everything came back negative. What ended up working was a medication that is prescribed for people with an irritable bowel. I don't remember the name of it, but I had to go to the regular pharmacy...it was a medication for humans. Anyway, it worked and he bounced back quickly.

Has any of the vets thought about giving him something for the inflammation? This could possibly help with the vomiting....I think it's great that your mom and dad have put him on IV's...this will keep him from being dehydrated.

Seems like his condition is caused by the food that you all feed the dog. I know you said the dog is only four years old, but it appears he is suffering. The most humane thing to do is put him down. Would you want to suffer for the rest of a forced life? Let the poor dog rest. One question though, why are you asking this in the Entertainment and Music P&S section. There is a dog section here you know. You are setting yourself up for some odd answers here. But anyway, good luck to you.

Just from personal experience, as I have lost pets in the past before, there comes a time when yoiu must let go. It sounds like your pet is suffering, and perhaps, it may be best to let go. There is a quality of life issue here. What kimd of life is it if your dog is hooked up to a feeding IV for food and water all the time? He/She is not able to chase cars or birds, etc because it is too weak. He sounds like a wonderful dog, but the expense of prolonging "life" may not be worth it. I had to let my cat go recently for something similar. she would not eat or drink. I had to make the hard decision to "let her go" you are not a monster or a killer if you do. They will understand. I had to wrestle with that, until I talked to a very knowledgable pastor who told me what I did was right.

Oh I am so sorry!!! Sweetie calm down! Did you try cheese? Has he been drinking? Okay if he has been drinking in the water drink pour some V8 or take little sprinkles of food in the water. Most dogs dont fall for it because of the smell. So than maybe give him a shot with a food mixture. And I had two dogs. When one of them died, (car crash) the other one was fine. But then when the other dog realized by everyday that her brother wasnt coming back, she got deep depression. She'd sleep all day. Eat very little and became weak and acted like she was almost about to die. Loss of energy was a ton of problems with her, but when she started going to puppy play groups, she was back to normal. Now I know a lot about dogs sweetie. But no offence I am not trying to be mean. (I'm probably not gonna get best answer) but no dog should have to live that way. Never. Some dogs do and the owners dont realize it. Your dog is in pain. He doesnt need to be like this! I am sorry but please put him down. It's the best for you and his pain. Please I am sorry but this is the way he would rather have it. I know he'd love to be playing fetch right now and getting pet and having all treats, but not in pain. nobody needs to feel that. Your dog lived up to 28 in dog years. Young but pretty far. My dog has lived up to 135 in dog years so she is 15 in human years. But I suspected her to die 4 years ago! She's running, happy, and she likes to get her energy but running laps! Okay I have to go bye! Hope this helps!

Try a different vet, or see if there are any veterinary hospitals in your area. Have the vets done x-rays, he may have a blockage which is stopping him from eating? If he is drinking try giving him meal replacement drinks which have alot of calories and will give him some nutrition. most importantly though find a vet who is able and willing to get to the bottom of this. Good luck

Go back to the vet or get another opinion now! He could have eaten something that has made him sick but he could have a turned intestine or bladder be shut down. Theres too many things to take a chance on.

Sorry to hear this - but I'm not sure what your question is if the vets have already made a diagnosis?

This would also be better in the right category of Y!A.
