They might squeek into the playoffs but there is no way they are going to make it to the world series. First they are going to have to keep off the charging Cardinals and Milwaukee though. The reason I say no is that their starting pitching is not that great which is in contrast to when they made a run in 03. Carlos Zambrano is a headcase. He has great stuff, but you never know what your are going to get out of him under pressure situations unlike Kerry Wood and Mark Prior in 2003 when they were healthy and productive. Ted Lilly is probably the Cubs most reliable pitcher but he is not dominating. Jason Marquis true to his typical late season fashion hasn't had a good game in over a month and the rest of their rotation is spotty. The post season is really about commanding pitching performances more than the regular season and the Cubs just don't have the pitching. I am a Cardinal's fan, but they just don't have enough good pitching to make a serious run IMO either.

They might win the division, but I cannot see them in the Series. The Cardinals caught lightning in a bottle last year, but that's not likely to happen again.

Honestly I'd rather see the Brewers take the division. Their fans have been suffering a much longer postseason absence, and Cubs fans will be equally miserable either (a) missing the postseason or (b) getting there and getting unceremoniously dumped in the Division Series, winning maybe one game. (No team in the NLC is very good.)

Besides, the 100 year anniversary of the last championship, next year, is a slightly better story. People like 100th anniversaries; no one cares about a 99th anniversary.

Yes, the Cubs will win the NL Central. As far as the world series, they have as good a chance as any team in the National League.
