we have a similar layout in our house. We normally use the sofa or recliners and and end table to divide the areas. The nice things is that when we have company, it's easy to expand the dining room.

You can also use open-back shelving to define the areas without closing them off entirely.

arrange sofas in a way that devides it visually, like putting a couch with its back facing dining table.
also u can put in curtains, and leave them almost open with tied from middle.
u can also use 2 totally different rugs to separate 2 ares.

Walls or barrier furniture will only make your place look smaller. Use large rugs and other accessories to "separate" and define your area.

you can buy a make-shift wall that looks like french doors -check out your local hardware/renovation store ---it is not permanent and is easy to install ---or you can get sliding walls on a track base.

*Edit - My Dad has sliding walls in his apartment which separate the kitchen from the den --its faux wood and convienient when you want more space.

Use a couch, bookshelf, or a screen to separate the areas.
