Yes, philosophy will only take you to the front door. Then that door will quickly close. Because philosophy is based on pure theory and assumption. Not a single point of philosophy has ever been, nor ever will be proved.. Philosophy is in a way, like religion. When it has been uncovered that the answer simply is not available, we choose to believe that which comforts us the most. And we begin to believe it with a vengeance, denying all underlying factors, until we have convinced ourselves that we now have obtained the final answer. Each new philosophy will indeed take you to a brand new front door--a door we may only peek through, and then are stopped before we really get inside to prove the truth. The study of philosophy is a worthy endeavor, but will lead to disappointment, if your expectations are to discover a final "truth."

Try reading the sequel, "Philosophy in 8 Easy Steps" - that should get you through the door and into the house.

Depends... I think it may give you an idea of what philosophy is or has been historically! I have not read it, but most of those books are from well intentioned professors/writers that want to make it easier on the average laymen of the subject. Like the "...for dummies" series!

Try "Think" by Blackburn. It is a good start up! I gave class(PHI101) as a T.A. using it as a textbook. Found it to be great for its purpose! Clean writing, basic easy stuff... could not complain!

Philosophy is endless, not something you can learn, more observation and commentary. Philosophy in seven easy chapters....maybe! Philosophy for dummies I certainly would buy lol.

The only thing that I have to ask is... how can reading take you anywhere except in your imagination? Reading is good for knowledge, but getting somewhere, anywhere requires action.
