It is the popular BSOD or "Blue Screen of Death" in Windows. It is caused by an error, usually due to system instability.

The Blue Screen Of Death means just that. It is when windows suffers a critical error from which it cannot recover. This was commonplace with the NT, 2k and ME systems. It seems that with XP and vista this is very much a thing of the past though so maybe Bill's team got something right in the end.

It did often mean that either the OS needed a clean installation (format, repartition and reinstall total) or the motherboard needed replacing. Was usually easier to buy a new PC.

Not knowing is a very good thing as I assume you are referring to the Blue Screen of Doom (or Death) that signifies a halt and memory dump on Windows NT (and subsequent) MS Operating Systems.

If you don't know what one is then that means you have not seen one - don't think many people could have said that when using Win NT and 2K so XP and Vista must have got something right :-)

You get a blue screen when there is an even when there is not a problem with your computer. Itis also called the blue screen of death. There could be something wrong with your hd, mem, oprating system or something else. Read the error and see if its specifying something. If you feel there is nothing wrong with your hardware, than it could just be your os. You can sysem restore, if you can clean computer files, or reformat, lastly it might not show up for a while.

When Windows suffers a critical error, it displays a blue screen with white text for the error message.

That is "blue screen".

Rather than repeating the excellent answers above, I will only add that the BSOD is one of the best marketing tools out there for MAC and Linux.
