Either of the mixes mentioned earlier would suffice, but I would go for laying the mortar on a bed of sand not hardcore as you can rake it to a nice level finish.....Smiffy

6 sand 1 cement and fairly dry mix.

5 to 1 is good but mix it like bricklaying mortar ..you should have hardcore as a base first then use the five dots method ..a blob in each corner and one in middle and tap down ..dont walk on for 12 hours
