More often than not, the focus is directly on the baby at birth and everybody buys something for the baby, a unique idea is to do something special for the mother or the father....as they are usually forgotten. Think of something they may need and then do that, even if it is an offer to help them with some housework, or to babysit if there are other children that need taking care of, while mommy and daddy are preoccupied or so that they can just get some sleep, or have a night out by themselves....another idea, is to pay for a month worth of nappy service.....which always comes in handy those first few weeks.

I like the idea of a personalised gift! Not sure where you're from but the department store Beales has personalised gifts like teddies & little shoes. How about a canvas set where mum can print his hand & feet? Boots sell this or Google Gift Republic. Any clothes would be appreciated I'm sure as they go through them quickly! If you have the money, you could always do a hamper of some of the above? & some nappies maybe? Newborn safe teddies/toys? Or something that plays sounds/music or lights up? Babies will love this & the noise will often send them to sleep!

Hi, I don't think it's original, but gift vouchers are practical. As you know people get so many gifts when they have a baby, so it's nice to be able to go along to the baby store and buy little essentials you have not got.

I'm afraid I can't help, but it's nice to see you're back. Don't get clothes unless they're 3-6 mths+, as you always get too many newborn gifts. Buy something that will last and means something to both you and the receiving family.

PS I've never spoken to a YA! user, but would always return your call :-o

I have always found that a v-shaped cushion (the ones that you use to sit up in bed) are great for both new mum and baby- mum can use it to support herself when breast/bottle feeding and then it can be used to support the baby when it begins to sit, and also to prevent it from rolling over etc. I have given this as a gift a few times now and have always been told how useful it was!

In Australia the mints make coin sets. Each year they make baby coin sets and also sets for a specific theme for the year. This year (07) it is the year of the lifesaver. Each of the coins produced have the year dated on them and with the baby set they have a little family tree page where you can add names for them. They are presented really well. I think these are a great keepsake and if kept in the family may become valuable in years to come.

when i gave birth to my daughter my mum gave the best prezzie! I got a gift bag with loads of pamper bits for me (bath oil, bio oil, chocs, face mask, and vouchers for my hairdressers). My other half got a gift bag with beer, daddy cufflinks and a daddy mug. And our little girl got an organic bath set and a small "my first bear". It was really nice to get bits for me - everyone else forgot all the work i had put in :o)and we ended up with loads of photo albums, clothes, really big teddies and silver bits for the baby which are now taking up loads of room! - dont i sound ungratefull :o)

I give age 3-6mth baby grows as most people including the parents buy newborn or 0-3mth and so they have far too many and then when they are outgrown(happens v.quickly) they have very liitle to put the baby in !

Nappies nappies nappies! it's the most helpful thing you could buy! I know it doesn't sound very exciting but nappies were the best presents i got!

Milk too if she's formula fed or breast pads (it's a right pain when you run out!!!)

OR what about a voucher for getting the baby's hand/foot imprinted in clay? John Lewis do it!

I got my best friends little girl a "birth bunny" from signaturebears.com. They are the cutest, softest little bunnies and they have huge floppy ears. One ear has pre-printed calico on one side with name, date, weight, length etc... and the other ear is calico as well but left blank for you to write a special message. These are so cute and come with a pink or blue ribbon to tie around their neck and they can become the babies new night time teddy to cuddle forever. It was only $25 as well.

I also like to give mother and baby gift baskets. Small one for baby with dummy, baby panadol/tylenol? , little blanket, face washers, singlets, baby shampoo/soap, little toy and a mothers basket with face masks, creams and lotions, new lipstick, foot scrub, loofahs/body mit, voucher for a pedicure.
You can personalise them to your budget and their taste.

Good luck
