This is my understand: a term paper is one that uses what you've learned so far to discuss something, a thesis paper is one which describes a new idea that you have and other works that back up your theories, and a research paper is one where you have a specific topic to reasearch and then report your findings.

A Term Paper implies that it is the big assignment for the course in the Term. It is usually worth more of your grade, it is usually expected to be longer, and you spend more of your time doing it. You would expect one term paper, and possibly some other minor paper assignments worth a lot less.

A Thesis is when you have to do an even larger paper within your Field of study in order to graduate. This is usually at a Masters Degree level or an Honours program, and you wouldn't do more than one for your degree.

A Research Paper can be just any writing assignment where you are looking up information to make an argument or present some information.

A term paper is submitted at the end of the term; a thesis paper at the end of the study. Both can be a research paper.
