From what I've learnt, Windows vista requires at least 1GB of RAM, the 512 for the actual Vista programme itself, and then AT LEAST 512 for all your other programmes.
Google it, you may find more info

512 is the system requirement for the Home Basic version, and while during bootup vista may utilize 100% of your ram, but it should release more than enough to run other programs, if it didn't then the system requirements would be higher.
note: the Home Premium and other versions require 1GB RAM or more.

Yeah, its true
thats just for the OS alone, if you plan to use very graphic-hectic programs and games, i would recommend any thing above 1GB, of course you have to pair it up with a good graphics card for nice performance.
You can install it with just 512mb ram, but its not recommended at all

Yes, it's recommended. It's generally recommended that you have at least 1-2 GB of memory when running anything graphically intensive like a video game while running Vista.

Yeah, you certainly need 512, but to run it decently, you should use a gig or more. 512 is the absolute bare minimum.

It is more likely to require 1GB to run correctly, many people recommend 1.5GB just for the system.
