I have read a lot of news that refer to a certain university in California as Cal, but can't really be sure if it means University of California and if so, what campus.

"Cal" is only used to refer to the University of California-Berkeley for sporting events. The reason it gets the name "Cal" is because it's short for California, and was the first and original University of California.

Yep, person above me is right. "Cal" refers to the University of California, Berkeley. It is one of the top schools in the nation and fairly well known. I checked with Google to confirm it.

Most likely it's UC Berkeley. My dad went to "Cal," and I've heard many others who have gone to Berkeley refer to it as Cal. I have conversely never heard anyone call any other college in California call their university Cal.
