AMD X2 6000+ could beat the E6600 and be comparable with the E6700, BUT still no match with the new E6850 which also runs at 3.0Ghz.

Intel is good for multimedia like music movies and games, but AMD is better for games than Intel. If you look closely to games, you will notice the processor requirements are lower for AMD processors than Intel processor because they tend to not be limited for efficiency like Intels are. Its a matter of preference and what you do with a computer on a daily basis.

A rule for anything electronic is "You get what you pay for" Intel has the better stuff right now, the core 2 duo's are very good! I am not much of an Amd fan, but if you on a very tight budget they will run things.

Right now, Intel is making more powerful processes than AMD. The reverse was true 6 months ago. It varies. You can't go wrong with either CPU. My primary PC has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 right now. I'm very happy with it.

Core 2 Duo's are amazing...but most Intel processors I know run *hot*. So be sure you cool them properly.
I like AMD because they run cool, and their pipelining is done much better I think. The Intel Pentium 4 was infamous for it's stupid pipelining. Extremely fast bursts, but no sustained throughput. AMD is more well known for throughput, I think.

At the moment the Intel Core 2 duo is the most powerful cpu.
You can compare cpu's here:

It is actually more important to have a good graphics card than a marginally faster cpu.
