No, not at all. A gal can't be expected to move in by herself. If your dad or brother can't help and your friends are not available, then...by all means hire someone. Good luck!

Not social suicide, but you need to keep a few things in mind. One, some colleges are laid out so you can't get a car anywhere near a dorm. You need to research if you can actually get a moving truck near your dorm before you hire one. Also, a whole moving truck is a lot of things. Especially if you happen to have a dorm you're sharing with another person. You might want to call the other person and coordinate what they're bringing so you don't end up with an over-abundance of stuff if you have a roomie. Also, again that is a lot of stuff and if you live far away from the doors or on anything above first level (some dorms don't have elevators) that could be a long day of moving things. You might want to consider bringing all the essential at first, determine how much space you have left and what else you need, and then bring the rest up in stages.

Not social suicide, but you might have trouble getting it near the dorm and have to walk a long way with your things. Many schools now have very specific procedures for moving in. You often arrive and are given a time later in the day when you have permission to drive up and unload your car within 5 or 10 minutes, then you have to immediately drive away so that the next car can drive up. Hired moving people may not be willing to operate on that kind of a schedule.

College isn't high school. The cliques and little circles that existed in high school no longer exist in colleges. I wouldn't worry about your social status over a little thing like a moving truck and concentrate more about your academics. That's what you're there for, after all.

Would you rather Mom & Dad move it in the pick-up truck? I would think enough is going on that nobody will notice who is doing what and how you get your things moved in.
