there are two types of error in scientific measurements.
1. random error, which is amenable to statistical analysis so that if you make enough measurements you can determine the mean and standard deviation for that measurement. precise measurements have low random error.
2. systematic error, which is not random, and due to uncontrolled factors or poor experimental design. accurate measurements have low systematic error.
